Profile Overview

Jay Joseph (Phd 2017, UniSA) is an Assistant Professor of Business & Society, focused on Business and Peacebuilding. He seeks to integrate Business and Peace research into practice through a number of avenues:


Assistant Prof. Business & Society, focused on Business and Peacebuilding - Jay's work is focused on the role of entrepreneurship/business in conflict and peace. Jay has published in a number of internationally recognized journals including the Journal of Business Ethics, Business & Society, Business Strategy and the Environment, Journal of Intellectual Capital, and the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies. He has extensive experience teaching Business & Society, and currently coordinates the Undergraduate Business Ethics course at AUB. 


Director, Business-in-Conflict Research Group - Jay leads the Business-in-Conflict Research Group at AUB, which hosts over 95 members and 30 affiliate researchers from Iraq, Lebanon, the UK, US, and across Europe, focused on understanding how local businesses in conflict zones can contribute to poverty reduction and peace. Jay has received several recognitions such as the inclusion of his work (Joseph et al. 2020) in the 2020 75th UN General Assembly Report on Business and Human Rights, his BICAR group being recognized as a 2020 AACSB 'Innovation that Inspires', while winning the Best Paper Award at the International Council for Small Business 2019 Conference. Jay acts as an advisor to several NGOs (Bring Hope Humanitarian Foundation, Sweden; Alissar, France), and is a Research Affiliate for the CLEO group at Queens University Belfast.


Trainer, Conflict-Sensitive Business Practices - Jay is currently developing the Master's module 'Conflict-Sensitive Business Practices' at the American University of Beirut. The course is designed to be offered to businesses operating in conflict settings, in addition to humanitarian sector actors working with businesses in conflict zones. 


Consultant, Business-Based Livelihood Programs - Jay works directly with several UN Agencies including UNIDO (Iraq), UNIDO (Lebanon), and IOM (Iraq), to translate business & peace knowledge into improved livelihood development programs that aid in reducing poverty and limiting the impact of war on vulnerable populations. As a research consultant, Jay has completed 27 research projects totaling over $500,000usd - working with the humanitarian sector, and multiple private and public sector organizations.
